Andhra University, Visakhapatnam Department of Instrument Technology The Department of Instrument Technology was started as instrument Manufacturing Section, as part of the Physics department in 1937. In 1946, a separate department of Applied Physics was instituted. The department of Applied Physics offered two year M.Sc. course and later a three year M.Sc. (Tech.) programs in Instrumentation, Optical Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Measurements. In view of the growing emphasis on Instrumentation, the department of Applied Physics was renamed as the Department of Instrument Technology and merged with the Engineering College in 1990. It offers a B.Tech. course in Instrumentation Engineering, since then. The department is well known for its research and consultancy in the areas of Technical Optics and Instrumentations. In 1966, the department pioneered research in the area of Thin-Film Technology and Photo-Elasticity. The other areas of research are VLF propagation, ultrasonics and Applications. The department offering its services to local industries to meet their requirements through testing and calibration of mea sing and control equipment. The faculty of department has successfully completed major research projects on 'Thin Films', 'Automatic Ellipsometry', 'Aspherical Optics', and "Surface Studies', funded by the UGC. The faculty of the department is also co-investigators in research projects of other departments of the University like Civil Engineering, Physics etc. The department started a self-financing M.Tech program in the year 2000 in 'Industrial Process Instrumentation', with a satisfactory response from the students. In 2003, the M.Tech Industrial Process Instrumentation course was recognised by AICTE to give stifunds to eligible candidates and approved for the admission of 18 students.
