Anna University, Chennai Department of Chemistry Department of Chemistry offers M.Sc(Applied Chemistry), M.Tech(Polymer Science and Engineering) and M.Phil(Chemistry) programmes besides catering to the needs of undergraduate B.E. / B.Tech. Programmes. M.Sc.(Applied Chemistry) was started in 1975 with an intake of 15 students and currently the programme is being run with 30 students. M.Phil(Chemistry) programme was started in 1980 after the formation of Anna University with an intake of 6 students. M.Tech(Polymer Science and Engineering) was introduced in 1995 as an inter-disciplinary programme with an intake of 15 students. The faculty members in the Department are actively involved in research in thrust areas such as Catalysis, Polymer, Environmental, Co-ordination, Bio-inorganic and Physical organic chemistry.About 60 Ph.D. Scholars(Full-Time & Part-Time) are pursuing research in these thrust-area. Faculty members mobilize funds towards research through sponsored projects from funding agencies such as DST, CSIR, UGC, DRDO, BRNS, MOEF, AICTE, etc., A sum of Rs.1.2 crores has been mobilized in the last 3 years and this department is one of the departments in active research and funds mobilization. The department has two Instrumentation laboratories with the state-of-art analytical equipments such as GC, HPLC, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, IR,FTIR, TOC, TGA and UTM. Powder XRD equipment and an exclusive computer laboratory are on the anvil under the DST-FIST assistance programme. As the laboratory is well equipped with adequate facilities, the department is undertaking many industrial consultancy and testing works. The department is ably supported by 14 dedicated and qualified faculty members, 8 technical staff and 3 administrative staff. Many faculty members undergo PDF programme in foreign universities to update their knowledge in the current area of research. The faculty members also periodically attend International conferences and seminars both within the country and abroad. The Ph.D. Scholars and PG students are actively participating and presenting their research works in conferences/seminars. The research findings are published in journals of high repute. About 250 papers were published in Internationals / National journals of repute during the last 5 years. The Ph.D. scholars are well placed within the country and abroad. The department is periodically organizing Summer / Winter programmes, continuing education programmes, refresher courses etc. to bridge the gap between industrialists and academicians.
