Primary answer
JEE Main acts as the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, which is the entrance exam for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the top candidates in JEE Main, usually around the top 2.5 lakh rank holders, are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Candidates must clear JEE Advanced to gain admission into IIT undergraduate engineering programs.
