Govt Banikanta College Of Teacher Education, Guwahati
The Banikanta College was established in January 1967 at the instance of Dr MN Goswami and C Das, the then Vice Chancellor and Registrar of Gauhati University respectively with the sole aim of catering to Teacher Education in the North Eastern Region of India. It was christened after the name of Dr Banikanta Kakoti, the great pioneer, researcher and an intellectual giant of Assam. Mr Radhakanta Das, a retired eminent Professor of Mathematics, took over the charge as the first Principal. After passing through the able hands of five eminent Principals the college was renamed as “Banikanta College of Teacher Education.”, The Government of Assam, with the sole aim of expansion of teacher education in the state, took over the college on 1st. April 1983. The college, after its affiliation under Gauhati University in 1967, was duly recognized by the National Council of Teacher Education NCTE for conducting BEd. course and is now upgraded to the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education IASE as announced by the MHRD and the developmental works have started from the year 2005 accordingly by the Govt of Assam. The present intake capacity of BEd. Course is 50 of each year ie.1st & 2nd year Courses. Besides, the BEd. course, the two year DElEd ODL Course also was started from 2018. Most of the student trainees are in-service teachers deputed by the state government from different secondary schools of Assam., However, The Banikanta College of Teacher Education IASE-Guwahati has successfully, completed 50 glorious years as a pioneer institute of teacher education. Ever since its inception, this institute has contributed towards producing renowned and dedicated teachers as well as teacher educators who have marked and paved a way for the teacher fraternity in the North Eastern Region of the country. This Golden Jubilee Celebration focuses on the issues and challenges of teacher education.
