The Madhab Chandra Das College was established in 1972 at Sonai, which is located at a distance of 17 K.M. from Silchar town. The college was originally affiliated to Gauhati University, Later on, its affiliation was transferred to the Assam University in 1994. It is on the deficit grant-in-aid scheme of the Government of Assam since 1985. The college is located in a rural area on a 3.13 acre plot of land. There are at present 20 permanent teachers in the college one of whom has got Ph.D. and another M.Phil. degree. Among 5 teachers in the non-sanctioned posts, 1 has got Ph.D. degree In addition there are 5 teachers in the non-sanctioned posts and no part-time teachers. The teachers are appointed as per the UGC and State Government and the University norms. The college has on its payroll a total number of 11 non-teaching staff. In the 2003-04 academic session 307 students have been enrolled.The Madhab Chandra Das College, P.O. Sonaimukh, Dt. Cachar (Assam) volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and submitted the Self Study Report to NAAC in December 2003. A Peer Team was constituted by the Council to visit the institution and validate the Self Study Report (SSR). The Peer Team, consisting of Prof. Dr. Basudeb Chattopadhyay, Asutosh Professor of Medieval & Modern Indian History and Member of the Senate, Calcutta University as Chairperson, Dr. M.S.K.Khokhar, Professor and Head, Department of Rural Technology and Social Development, G.G. University, Bilaspur, Chhatisgarh, and Mr. R.
