B.A English
The faculty at the Department of English in Shiavji College is a blend of youth and experience. B.A. (Hons) English is a course currently in great demand and Shivaji College also attracts boys and girls in large numbers who want to make a career by studying English. Besides, in all the undergraduate courses, English is included as a main or a qualifying subject.
In addition to classroom teaching, audio-visual aids are used by the teachers to develop an interactive climate in the Department. The study of texts in English is supplemented by screening of film adaptation of various texts. The English Literary Society at the College arranges film screenings, poetry readings, seminars, lectures, and symposia. Staging of plays is also a part of the activities conducted by the ELS. The idea is to provide the students forum for self-development and self-expression.
Admissions for B.A. (Hons) I for the academic session 2009-2010 were done on the basis of the Common Aptitude Test in English conducted by the Department of English, Delhi University in which 70% weightage is given to the written test and 30% to the CBSE score. This ensures that those who have an aptitude for, and genuine interest in, English Studies make it to the course.
Academic/Extra-curricular Activities
The Department of English organized an educational trip to the Jim Corbett National Park from November 13-15, 2009. A literary fest will also be organized by the Department in January 2010. There will be theme-based lectures by eminent scholars; film screenings followed by discussions; paper presentations; and various competitions.
Students’ Achievements
Students of English Honours have shown high participation and competition spirit in various inter-college competitions. One of the students won the first prize in “Just a Minute”, conducted at the Literary Fest of Kamala Nehru College, while many of them participated in the Creative Writing Contest too. In 2008, members of the ELS staged a self-directed play at Khalsa College. In 2009 two students from the Department participated in the Debate Competition held in Hindu College. Ekta Rai from B.A. English III won the first prize at Kamala Nehru College in paper presentation competition in 2009.
