Post Graduate Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry came in to existence after the faculty of Science stream started functioning in the early sixties in this College. Presently the Department offers Graduate Degree course in Honours and Pass. During the last decade Post-Graduate course with specialization in Analytical Chemistry has been opened. In 2008 a Computational Chemistry Laboratory has been developed.
The Department has a Seminar consisting of the Honours and PG students as members. The members of teaching staff are also its members. The Department seminar provides a strong and healthy platform for updating of knowledge among students in various fields of Chemistry. All the students are involved in seminar and research activities and are guided by the eminent teachers of the department. The Seminar Library comprises of around five hundred books containing Text books, Reference books and Journals, for the use of students and staffs both alike, for updating the knowledge in recent advancements in the field of Chemistry.
The department has received grants from the UGC to under take infra structure development and renovation during 2009-10.It has thoroughly renovated all the laboratories, store room and other premises. It has an Inorganic Laboratory equipped with all the modern gadgets and instruments. The Organic Laboratory is equipped with the state of the art semi-micro synthesis glass wares and other sophisticated instruments. The Analytical and physical Laboratory is air conditioned and well equipped with instruments like Visible Spectrophotometer, UV Spectrophotometer, digital pH meter, Turbidity meter and polarimeter etc.
The department has adequate infra structure and laboratory facilities for research. Students and staff are encouraged to pursue research with such facilities. The Department boasts of having teaching facility of Computational Chemistry and to support this it has a very good computational laboratory with eight computer terminals along with internet facility through broad band connection. Students passed out from this Department have achieved great success in employment. They are placed in different industries, companies and other manufacturing units in the country and abroad.
