Devi Ahilya University (DAU), Indore Department of Life Long Learning The Department of Lifelong Learning (formally Department of Adult and Continuing Education and Extension work) of Devi Ahilya University was established under central Government’s 20 Points programme during 1984. It has been playing a vital role in taking university to masses. The Department has always taken special efforts to make its activities socially relevant, economically viable with a target-oriented approach. Department of Lifelong Learning offers various kinds of need based (short duration) Continuing Courses, which help creating employment opportunities for unemployed youth. The Department provides individuals the opportunity to learn at any stage of one’s life. In various context and situation, through all formal, non-formal and formal system of education. It is a pedagogical method, which is generally achieved through distance education, e-learning, correspondence education, continuing education. It includes educational programmes to improve and add new qualifications, improve the existing skills or acquiring new skills. Institutions and organizations are making provisions to impart training and refresher courses for the employees to update their knowledge and skills to compete in this competitive world. The retired people are also provided learning opportunities to utilize leisure time productively. The acceleration of scientific and technological development has made lifelong learning very important. The time span for primary, secondary and tertiary education is hardly sufficient to acquire a professional career, which will last for rest of his life. Lifelong Learning has become a fundamental goal of recent education policies, often advocated as a way to achieve socio-economic development and as a tool for promoting “Knowledgebased” society. The UGC in its XI plan Guidelines on Lifelong Learning & Extension strongly advocates that education does not end with schooling but is a lifelong process.
