Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering that is concerned with protecting human beings from the adverse effects of environment, such as pollution, as well as improving quality of environment. Environmental engineers work towards improvement of recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control. It is concerned with finding sustainable solutions in the field of public health. Implementing laws which promote adequate sanitation in urban, rural and recreational areas. It deals with waste water management, air pollution control, recycling, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, environmental sustainability, and public health issues. Environmental engineers also design municipal water supply and industrial waste water treatment systems They deal with environmental issues such as the effects of acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources. At many universities, environmental engineering programs follow either civil engineering department or chemical engineering department.
