About
Mechanical engineering is the discipline which applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for designing, analysing, manufacturing, and maintaining mechanical systems. This discipline involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons etc.
Mechanical engineers use basic components (wheels, axles, levers, screws, springs and hinges) to make machines such as vehicles, farm machinery, household appliances, robots etc. One of the most important skill needed in mechanical engineering is an in-depth understanding of physics, mathematics and materials.
Mechanical engineers also work in Biomedical engineering field, specifically with biomechanics, transport phenomena, biomechatronics, bionanotechnology, and modeling of biological systems.
Mechanical engineers play a big role in various industries like automotive (engine, transmission, sensors); aerospace (airplanes, aircraft engines, control systems for airplanes and spacecraft); biotechnology (implants, prosthetic devices, fluidic systems); computers and electronics (disk drives, printers, cooling systems, semiconductor tools); microelectromechanical systems (MEMS); energy conversion (gas turbines, wind turbines, solar energy); environmental control ( air-conditioning, refrigeration, compressors) etc.
