Surendranath College for Women was established in 1948, mainly for imparting higher education to girls from partition-affected families. After partition many families came from the then East Pakistan and settled in the Sealdah railway station area and its neighborhood. It became necessary to open a branch for women at the nearest college. The girls had to take up jobs during the afternoons to support their families. So our College with its morning timings came into existence.

History In 1882 Surendranath Banerjea, eminent scholar, orator and statesman and one of the pioneers of India’s struggle for self-government and freedom, took over the charge of Presidency School. In January 1884, it was renamed Presidency Institution and became affiliated to the Intermediate Standard of the University of Calcutta. Later in the same year, with permission from Lord Ripon, it was renamed as Ripon College and became a full-fledged degree College under the University of Calcutta.

Sundarban Hazi Desarat College is a grant-in-aid college of West Bengal and is recognized under section 2(f) and 12B by the UGC. The college was established in 1961 at Pathankhali village in the then remote Gosaba island of Sundarbans. Despite lack of proper communication facility, drinking water, power supply and many other minimum required infrastructural facilities, the zeal and eagerness of some people to educate the most deprived and backward class of this area gave birth to this college.

The College runs in three shifts. The Morning Shift is exclusively meant for girls, the Evening Shift is meant for boys while the Day Shift runs as a co-educational unit.
