Established in 1944 as Sambalpur College, the name of the institution was changed to Gangadhar Meher College in 1949 after the name of the illustrious Oriya poet. It is situated in a tribal dominated part of Orissa and strives hard for excellence in its way to fulfill its goal and mission since then. Basically, it aims at educating weaker sections, which constitute half of the population of Western part of Orissa.

Govt.Degree College, Samba affiliated to University of Jammu was established in the year 2005, by the Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir.In the beginning only the subject in Arts stream were offered. It was in 2010 that in respond to students demand,Science and Commerce stream were also started in addition to Arts stream. At present there are 19 subjects taught in college. There are 37 permanent faculty members and 15 academic arrangement teachers in the college.

kuchinda college, established in the year 1964 is nestled in a picturesque setting at the head-quarters of kuchinda sub-division in the district of sambalpur.

Bhima Bhoi College, Rairakhol, Sambalpur, Orissa was established in the year 1970 and got recognition from the UGC under 2f on 30-6-1992. Presently it is affiliated with Sambalpur University. The campus is located in a rural area, now under Notified Area Council, inhabited predominantly by the tribal people. It is spread over an area of 20 acres.

SUIIT has been established in the year 2010 as an autonomous constituent institute of Sambalpur University in the line of IIITs to impart training and to have quality research programme relating to Information Technology and allied subjects. People of Samba and the surrounding areas had been demanding for opening of a college at Samba right from 1952. In 1983 Wazir Commission recommended a separate District “BAHU” comprising of Tehsil Samba and areas from west bank of river Tawi. But the recommendations were not implemented and the demand of people of Samba remained hanging in balance.
