Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi is a public technical and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The year 1957 saw the beginning of a powerful movement. The Central Hindu Boys School had been established on July 7, 1898 in a rented house at Karnaghanta in Varanasi by noted freedom fighter , renowned Social Worker ,very kind hearted figure, an Irish lady Dr. Annie Besant. After that the then Kashi Naresh Maharaja Prabhu Narayan Singh donated a building in Kamachha where Dr. Annie Besant had shifted the college on March 1899 . On the basis of request letter, senate of Allahabad University approved this college up to intermediate level.

The premier centre of higher learning was established in 1916 by the unparalleled visionary of the country, Pandit Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya. The University is known for imparting innovative programmes to fulfill the diverse needs of the society. In furtherance of the process it launched the Masters programme in Management in late 60s.

The founder of Banaras Hindu University, Pandit Madan Mohan Malviyaji instituted a course in Ceramic Technology as early as 1924 with the noble objective of advancing glass and ceramic technology in India.
