The college was originally started as a School of Arts and crafts by the then Government of the Nizam of Hyderabad in the erstwhile Hyderabad state in the year 1940. Later, it was brought under the Department of Technical Education of the Government of Andhra Pradesh as the Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture. With the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University In 1972, it was made a constituent College of the University.
