Gauhati University, Guwahati Department of Philosophy INTRODUCTION Objectives To provide philosophical knowledge keeping in view the global trend in the subject. To provide the environment for the flourishing of the philosophical mind. To help in developing through the study of philosophy an analytical outlook. To provide education based on epistemic, aesthetic and spiritual values for the holistic growth of the student. HISTORY The Department of Philosophy was established in the year 1948 under the headship of Dr. Rakesh Ranjan Sharma. The department has reached its present state with the contribution from eminent scholars like Dr. Rakesh Ranjan Sharma, Professor K.C. Das, Professor M. K. Kutty, Professor D.K Chakravarty, Sri. Bhabananda Dutta, Smti. Nilima Dutta, Professor Nilima Sharma, Professor B. Pahi, Prfessor K. Saratchandran, Professor K. K Bagchi, Dr. A. P. Rao, DR. K. R. Patnaik, Professor G. C. Khan and Professor S. S. K. Singh during its formative years. The department has produced more than 80 PhD’s and various faculty members of the department have published 575 research papers since its inception. From the department, 37 students have cleared NET examination while 25 have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship from UGC and ICPR. The department publishes its own research journal GUJP. The department has published the books Perspective In Contemporay Philosophy (Edited by Professor (Retired) Dilip Kumar Chakravarty) , Rethinking Swaraj (Edited by Professor Sibnath Sarma), Of Knowledge, Freedom and Reason (Edited by Professor Sauravpran Goswami) and Dimensions of Philosophy: Tradition and Modernity (Edited by Professor Sauravpran Goswami). The students of the department publish an annual journal called ‘Anvesika’. The department organized the 52nd session of Indian Philosophical Congress, the 8th Conference of Indian Society for Gandhian Studies and the 4th Conference of The International Congress of Social Philosophy. Moreover the department holds at least one national level seminar every year.
