Gauhati University, Guwahati Department of Statistics MISSION PROFILE The need for Statistics has made itself felt in almost every phase of human activity. It is now considered to encompass the science of basing inferences on observed data and the entire problem of making decisions in the face of uncertainties. Our objectives are to train students, to promote research and to extend frontier of knowledge in Statistics. It is now considered to encompass the science of basing inferences on observed data and the entire problem of making decisions in the face of uncertainties. Our objectives are to train students, to promote research and to extend frontier of knowledge in Statistics. HISTORY Established in 1948, Statistics Department is one of the few departments, the university had started with. At that time there were very few universities of the country offering Statistics as one of the subjects. Initially it was started with under graduate course but the PG classes started in 1949 with Professor V.S. Huzurbazor Ph.D. (Canter), Former Professor and Head of Statistics department of Pune and Adam Smith Prize Winner from Cambridge University. Since then, it has continued to be a personification of Statistics education and research activities in the whole of the North Eastern India. The department was served by mentors of the subject like, Professor J. Medhi, Professor Sudhendu Biswas, Professor Zachavia, Professor N.U. Probhu, (who later became the Professor of operation Research in Cornell University, U.S.A), Professor S.M. Sinha and other prominent members. Initially the department was housed at the present Physics Department of Gauhati University but later on in the year 1983 was shifted to its present location in the western part of the campus. FACILITIES & ASSETS COMPUTER LABORATORY The Statistics Department houses its own computer laboratory with 24 hours high speed, fiber optic Internet connection. There are as many as 40 computer terminals in the department. It facilitates all major open source Statistics software (both Linux and MS Windows). Through this connection one can access to full text electronic versions of current and previous issues of more than thousand international journals of different subjects.
