Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar The Department of Physics was created in 1972 with appointment of two lecturers. It was catering to the needs of Chemistry and Biology departments from 1972-1979. The teaching programme of the department started at the level of B.Sc. (Honours School) in 1979 and M.Sc. (Honours School) in 1982. Now the Department of Physics offers courses leading to the degrees of B.Sc. (Honours School), M.Sc. (Honours School), M.Sc.(Honours), M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. These courses have been designed keeping in view the recent advances and developments in the relevant research fields and also in accordance with the UGC norms at par with IIT and Central Universities. The new equipments are being continuously added and the laboratories are refurnished and even sustained efforts are being made by the faculty members to improve the infrastructure by generating more funds for research through various National and International organizations. The department has its own library having a good collection of books with multiple copies of text books, reference books etc. A much large collection of books of Physics are also available in the Central library of the University. The department has its own well equipped Computer laboratory for students/research students in addition to the main computer centre. The airy classrooms with adequate furniture and equipped with overhead projector/multimedia projectors are also available. The students success rate is 100%.
