Located in Ahmednagar College was founded in 1947 by the late Dr.B.P.Hivale with the support and co-operation of the American Marathi Mission,Bombay,the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, Boston, Minnepolis,Minnesota, the late Mr. William H. Danforth of St. Louis, Missouri and a number of other individual friends and groups., In the twenty years of its existence, its strength has grown from about 300 students students to more than 2,500. 60 years have passed and now its strength has been increased to more than 7,000.It is situated on a 55 acre campus on the outskirts of Ahmednagar City, where a modern physical plant has grown up and continues to grow with the addition of new buildings nearly every year to meet the expanding needs of the institution. It is affiliated to the University of Pune., Despite its comparitive youth, it has gain a national reputation as one of the finest colleges in India, drwaing students from every part of the country and from a number of foreign countries. It sponsors a variety of cultural and community service programmes and number among its staff members scholars of international reputation who are actively engaged both in creative teaching and in basic research. The NAAC Committee has commended the College for the quality education provided, for students support and welfare programmed, for excellence in research and academic activities, for the sound and enthusiatic Management and for the harmonious atmosphere on the campus. Ahmednagar College got the 'Best College Award' from the university of Pune in Feb 2006., Ahmednagar College has pioneered the postgraduate course in Drug Chemistry, the only one of its kind in the country. The Institute of Social Work and Research Development was born out of an idea of involving students in rural areas to take part in the process of National Development. The idea was accepted later by the Government of India in the form of National Service Scheme[NSS]. The Institute of Management Studies, Career Development and research took the initiative in designing the course 'Post Graduate Diploma' in Environment Management which has been approved by the University of Pune and the course- first of its Kind in Maharashtra has commenced in the Institute. The IMSCDR has become the first ISO-9001, 2000 certified educational institute in Pume University., Ahmednagar College has been awarded 'A' Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council [NAAC], Bangalore, an independent agency that undertakes the assessment process to rank institutes of higher education in India, a scheme initiated by the UGC. The assessment of Ahmednagar College took place in September 2003. The criteria of assessment include curricular variety, student support, teaching, learning and evaluation, research, infrastructure, organization and management and healthy practices.
