K.J. Somaiya Polytechnic is an Autonomous Grant-in-Aid Polytechnic of Government of Maharashtra. Institute was established in the year 1963 with Diploma Programmes in Civil, Electrical & Mechanical Engineering with an intake of 40 each. In the year 1966, the intake for these Courses was changed from 40 to 60. To cater the need of employed technicians, Institute started Part-Time Diploma Programmes in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering with intake of 40 and 60 respectively. Full-Time Diploma in Industrial Electronics started in 1994 with intake of 30 and Part-Time Diploma in Industrial Electronics in 2001. In 2006, under Un-Aided Section, Institute started Diploma in Computer Engineering with an intake of 60.

In 1994, Government of Maharashtra as granted Academic Autonomy to the Institute. Curriculum of All Diploma Programmes is regularly revised based on requirements of Industry, Inputs from Alumni, Parents and other stake holders. All Diploma Programmes have equivalence from Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education, M.S.

All Aided Diploma Programmes were accredited in 2005 with Civil, Electrical and Mechanical accredited for 5 years and Industrial Electronics with 3 years. Institute has applied for reaccreditation to NBA AICTE.

Scholarships and Funding

Few Scholarships are instituted by some unanimous donors for full-time students.
The scholarship amount is equal to Rs. 8500/- or fee paid by students which ever is less.
Family income from all sources should be less than Rs. 5 lakh annually.
Preference will be given to students whose parents are not having regular income through employment.

Overall the college has a great campus and ground for sports and the ambiance is pretty peaceful.
Placements: An average of 60-70 students is there in every batch. The fee charges depend on the course we are doing. For electrical engineering, it is around Rs.15,000 -Rs. 20,000 whereas for computer science it is more than 1 lac. Companies like L&T, Infotech, Accenture, and other IT companies recruit us. Around 5% of the students get internships at Tata Power Institute.

Infrastructure: We have a lot of computer labs, computers and sports activities in the college. The canteen is pretty decent and has a vegetarian menu with snacks like samosas, misal, etc. We even have a great library with all the books related to our courses. Overall, cleanliness is pretty decent too.

Faculty: Somaiya Polytechnic is an autonomous college, so we have a bit different courses and subjects from other colleges as this college is not under government rules. Teachers are good. but strict, and they punish students unnecessarily and stop teaching if they don't want to. The courses will help us in the future for the engineering degree. Many students drop the course because they fail the exams.

Other: Many events and fests are held regularly in the college where many celebrities are invited as chief guests.
