Sngap Syiem College was set up by the Maharam Syiemship Higher Education Association MSHEA on the 11th April, 1985 with Shri. K.D Ramsiej as the founder Principal. The MSHEA appointed an Ad-hoc Governing Body of the College on the 1st January, 1985. Shri. Rowell Lyngdoh, the then MLA &Minister of PWD Government of Meghalaya,was the President and holds the post till date. Immediately after the establishment of the College, the Government extended support to this noble cause by sanctioning 9 Teaching Posts and 4 non-teachings 2 Staff & 2 Grade IV. Initially, the College was sheltered at Maharam Government High School till 1987. From 1st August, 1987, classes were conducted in a rented building till the College got its own Campus on July, 1991. The College isnamed after “Sngap Syiem” or “Sngap Raja”, the then Chieftain of Maharam Elaka and a freedom fighter against the British regime along with his contemporary, ‘’U Tirot Singh”. The first name of the College was “Sngap Singh Syiem Memorial College” but the Governing Body, on 6th May, 1994 abridged the name to “Sngap Syiem College” which remains till date. The motto of the College is “Arise and Shine”., Provisional Affiliation for B.A. Pass Course was granted by NEHU in March,1992 and the Honours Affiliation was granted in June, 2000. The Institution has been in existence for about three decades catering to varied needs of aspirants of the hailing from scores of villages inhabited by Scheduled Tribes in the south western part of the state of Meghalaya. The Institution is providing education in Arts Stream to the poor and less-privileged rural students of the area at an affordable cost., The College is permanently affiliated to North Eastern Hill University andis recognized by UGC under 2(f) & 12B. it is under the grant-in-aid system of the government of Meghalaya. This Institution is the only Degree College in the District., In the year 2008 commerce and in the following science streams were introduced at the higher secondary level only., The College observed a year-long Silver Jubilee in the year 2010.The Inaugural Function, on 24th May, 2010 was graced by Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister,in presence of Shri. Rowell Lyngdoh, Deputy Chief Minister and Smt. A Lyngdoh, Minister of Education, Government of Meghalaya. On the 4th December 2010, the college closed the jubilee celebration. Shri.V.H. Pala, MP Lok Sabha Minister of States graced the occasion with great enthusiasm., In the year 2013-14, the Management of the College adopted the resolution to delink 10+2 from the College under the same management which is functioning in the same campus as “Sngap Syiem College Higher Secondary Section”. There are three Streams in the Higher Secondary Section and Teachers in Arts Stream of the College are also engaged in Class 10+2 classes., VISION, Motivating all students, especially those from the disadvantaged groups, towards academic pursuits and excellence by facilitating them to the full and bringing about a holistic development of personality., MISSION, To provide opportunity to the rural as well as less privileged people to pursue higher studies on an equal footing as others;, To equip students with the necessary skills to function as responsible professionals/individuals and productive citizens of a democratic country;, Developing respect for cultural diversity, and a sense of unity among students;, Producing knowledge-based learners through value-based education;, To create awareness on environmental issues.
