Mizoram University, Aizawl Department of Zoology The Department of Zoology as a post-graduate department came into existence on 11th February 2005 and the first batch of M.Sc. students was admitted in academic session beginning 2006. The department offers PG course in Zoology with an intake capacity of 20 students. The syllabus of M.Sc course is framed on UGC guidelines. The department also offers Ph.D. training to deserving students and presently, eight students are working for their Ph.D degrees. It is proposed to initiate the M.Phil. programme soon. The department is in the process of setting up a modern animal house and tissue culture facilities, museum and procure state of art equipments required to cater to the needs of teaching and research. The department has an able faculty of five and is headed by prof.Ganesh Chandra Jagetia. Apart from Prof. Jagetia, the department has two Readers, Dr.G.S.Solanki and Dr.G. Gurusubramanian and two Lecturers including Mr. H.T Lalremsanga and Ms.E.Lalhmingliani. The department strives to undertake cutting edge research in the fields of cancer biology, radiation biology, molecular genetics, conservation biology, natural resource management, animal-plant-microbe interactions, biocontrol and other related areas. Cancer is the second largest killer in the world and despite longstanding research the complete cure of cancer has remained a distant dream. It is the endeavour of the department to carry out research to relieve the suffering of the cancer patients and protect them against the mutagenic effect of radiation during treatment by carrying out translational research. Mizoram is one of the major areas of biodiversity hot spot and home for various endemic & endangered fauna. The efforts will be made to conserve the biodiversity in general and the specific emphasis on endemic species. Around 57% geographical area of mizoram is under bamboo cover ranging from 400 to 1500m above MSL and the rest with other crops, where the condition for build up of pest population are conducive that result in loses and famine. Changing agricultural practices have aggravated the situation further , therefore it is necessary to establish novel approaches including integrated pest management, use of natural enemies, biopesticides, pheromones, proteinase inhibitors etc. to reduce the pesticide load.
