The college was established in July 1964 with only undergraduate course in Arts faculty. Starting with 135 students and only one faculty, the college has now acquired a multi-faculty P.G status. Taking into account the importance of women education Shri Ram Richchapal established the college in the memory of his mother Smt. Gauri Devi. Former Chief Minister Honourable Shri Mohan Lal Sukhadia inaugurated the college., The addition of Science faculty in 1965, Political Science honors in 1968 and Commerce faculty in 1980 expanded the horizons of learning. The state government gave sanction to Post Graduate courses in Political Science and Psychology in 1992. The Departments of Hindi and Sanskrit were also given post-graduate courses. Undergraduate course in Geography was introduced in the year 2009-2010., For the all round development of the students, the college also conducts year-round extra-curricular activities under the aegis of games department, N.C.C, N.S.S, cultural commuittee, RMol, Planning Forum, Creativity forum, and women's studies cell., It is worth mentioning that the students from the college have highly benefitted from these activities and have achieved recognition on national and international levels. In the session 2009-10, 3173 students studied in this college. To take care of the needs of outstation students, the college started its own hostel in 1993.
