Scholarship

The Swiss Government via the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) invites applications for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2020-21 from international young researchers and students having a master's degree or PhD degree. The main objective of the scheme is to promote research cooperation and international exchange between Switzerland and other countries. These scholarships are categorised into three types namely, PhD scholarships, Postdoctoral scholarships and Research fellowship. The selected students will receive a scholarship amount of up to CHF 3,500 per month and other benefits. 

Important Dates

Scholarship application starts - 1st August 2019
Scholarship application deadline - 12th November 2019
Beginning of the scholarship - 1st September 2020

Eligibility

For Postdoctoral Scholarships

To be eligible, an applicant must -

  • Have obtained a PhD degree between 31 December 2016 and 31 July 2020 recognised by the Swiss University (Note: The applicants have to submit their degree to FCS as a proof before the start of the scholarship)
  • Have a devoted research proposal that also includes the timeline 
  • Provide a letter issued by a professor of any Swiss hosting institution stating his/her will to supervise and support the postdoctoral research
  • Possess good command over required language skills for postdoctoral research
  • Be willing to relocate to Switzerland during the grant period 
  • Not have been in Switzerland for more than one year at the beginning of the scholarship
  • Not have already been a Swiss Government Scholarship holder

For PhD Scholarship /Research Fellowship 

To be eligible, an applicant must -

  • Possess a master's degree or equivalent, recognised by the Swiss University, before 31 July 2020 (Note: The applicants have to submit their degree to FCS before the scholarship starts) 
  • Be born after 31 December 1984
  • Have a research proposal that includes a timeframe 
  • Provide a letter issued by an academic professor (including his/her short CV) of host institution confirming his/her will to supervise and support the PhD thesis/research
  • Have good command over required language skills for the research/studies
  • Be willing to relocate to Switzerland during the grant period
  • Not have been in Switzerland for more than one year at the beginning of the scholarship
  • Not have already been a Swiss Government Scholarship holder

How to Apply

Eligible candidates can apply for the scholarship through the following steps -
Step 1: Obtain the application package from the Swiss Embassy in India through email. 
Step 2: Fill in the form (typed) and take its print out. 
Step 3: Fix a recent photograph on the form and sign it. 
Step 4: Attach the necessary documents. 
Step 5: Submit 1 original and 1 copy of the application documents to the Swiss Embassy in India at the mentioned address -
