The Vinayaka Mission’s Sankarachariyar Dental College, Salem was instituted in the year 1986 as an affiliated institution under the University of Madras and later on affiliated to the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai with three courses viz., Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Diploma in Dental Mechanic and Diploma in Dental Hygienist and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS).

The Vinayaka Mission’s Sankarachariyar Dental College later on became the constituent of VINAYAKA MISSION'S RESEARCH FOUNDATION [DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY] from 2006. The institution is located on NH 47, Sankari Main Road, Ariyanoor,Salem-636008 in 10.14 acre campus with a build up area of 1,14,149 sq. ft.

The institution has committed to impart quality dental education to the students from different socio economic back grounds. The institution offers under graduate programme, 8 post graduate programmes, Diploma courses in Dental Mechanic and Dental Hygienist .The campus has a well equipped library with internet facility for the staff and students.

VMSDC has committed itself to become a center for excellence in Dental Education and Hospital Practice in the field of Dental Sciences with the objective of strengthening the health care of the country. VMSDC is located in the city of SALEM, TAMILNADU State, South India. SALEM is about 200 kms from Bangalore and easily reachable both by Roads and Railways.

The Dental College was established in 1986-87 and is at present conducting BDS and MDS courses in eight special divisions. The College is recognized by both the Dental Council of India and the Government of India. It is affiliated to the VINAYAKA MISSION'S RESEARCH FOUNDATION [DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY] from 2001-02. Earlier it was affiliated to the TN DR.MGR MEDICAL University CHENNAI TAMIL NADU from 1989-90 and it was affiliated to the MADRAS University from 1986-87. The college is located in NH47 CHENNAI-COCHIN HIGHWAY
