This is an inter-disciplinary Department for studying the socio-economic conditions of both the rural and urban population, analysing the socio-linguistic aspects of the depressed classes, especially of the scheduled tribes and an investigative research on feministic rights, avenues of jobs for Women, infanticide, child labour, Child Hygiene etc., It occasionally undertakes projects with a view to assist the Government in implementing some of their programmes. A number of minor and major projects have been completed and the findings submitted by the staff. Mention may be made of the Study of demography, Dictionary of Economics terms and prevention and control of AIDS. Similar specialised Dictionaries of Sociology, anthropology and an exclusive study of Juvenile Delinquents are worthy of mention.

=> To coin new technical terms and standardize the existing technical terms pertaining to social sciences in Tamil.
=> To assist the Government to plan and implement their various programs.
=> The department has organized 34 seminars, workshops, training programmes and refresher courses
=> The faculty members of the department have completed 24 research projects
=> The faculty members have published more than 15 books
=> More than 10 Ph.D. have been awarded on women studies
=> C. Subramanian has received Dr. Malcolm S. Adisesaiah Literacy Award – 1996, Tamil Nadu
