The department started with the princely gifts from Taraknath Palit, an eminent barrister, in June 1912, and Rashbehary Ghosh, an eminent jurist and scholar, in August 1913. The Physics Department was formally inaugurated with the appointment of C.V. Raman as Palit Professor in 1917.
