University of Lucknow Department of Commerce Fondly known as the Gateway to Commerce Education in Lucknow, the department is a pioneering institution which has earned a niche for itself in academic excellence ever since its inception in 1921 A.D. It was in 1941 – 42 that the postgraduate degree, M.Com was instituted with the first batch of 22 students. The desire to grow, led to the introduction of Ph. D. Programme in the department in the year 1944–45 and the first Ph. D. Degree was awarded in 1946 to Late Prof. K.C. Sarkar - a former Dean of the Faculty of Commerce. The relentless pursuit towards academic excellence, resulted in the instituting of D.Litt degree in the department in 1953 and the first D.Litt in Accounting in the World was awarded to Dr. R.M. Lal renowned Chartered Accountant and former faculty of this department. Ever since its inception, the department has produced over 200 Ph. Ds and D. Litt degree awarded to 3 teachers, along with numerous research oriented articles authored by faculty members. In the last 5 years almost 100 students have been admitted to the Ph. D. programme in the department. Built over approximately 1000 sq. meters area, the classrooms are commodious and the teaching methodology includes traditional as well as modern audio–visual aids.
