University of Lucknow Department of Physics Teaching in the Department of physics commenced from July 16, 1921. Dr. D. B. Deodhar was the Head of the Department at the time of its inception; six months later Dr. Wali Mohammad took over as the first Professor and Head, Department of Physics, Lucknow University. Both the undergraduate and post-graduate classes were held in the main block of the Department's buildings. M.Sc. students were offered two specializations namely Wireless (later on updated and called electronics) and X-rays. The Department could boast of installing the first transmitter in the city which broadcast programmes for short duration each day. The Lucknow Station of All India Radio was set up later. The transmitter was confiscated by the then British Government during the second world war. Students of the Department have found employment in the All India Radio and now Doordarshan and have risen to occupy the highest positions in the electronic media, Department of Meteorology, the National Physical Laboratory, Defense Services including the Defence Science Laboratories, National and International Universities and Civil Services. Of late the Department has introduced optional Course of study in Lasers and Opto­electonics and full fledged courses of M.Sc.(Electronics). Incidentally Lucknow is the first State University to start this Hi-tech programme of study at the post-graduate level. The staff and the students of the Department have made original contributions in research in the fields of x-ray spectroscopy, macromolecular physics, experimental solid state physics etc. Department of Physics University of Lucknow Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh India
