University of Roorkee Department of Physics From a modest begining in 1960, the Department has now grown into an active centre of quality teaching and research. Our program have special features which perhaps only few other institutions have. Our achievements in research have been well recognized by UGC by selecting our department under Special Assistance Programme in 1979 in the thrust areas of Solid State Physics and Atomic and Molecular Collision Physics. This programme was further extend in 1985 and 1992 respectively. In 1986, the UGC again selected us under its COSIST programme. The U.P.Council of Science and Technology has also selected our department as a Centre of Excellence in Physics in 1987-88. Given the earlier track record and the cosist and special assistance grants, the Physics department is poised for a quantum leap and shall be able to make significant contribution in different field of activity.
