West Bengal State University, North 24 Parganas Department of Mathematics Modern society is demanding much greater mathematical knowledge of its citizens than ever before. The prime objective is not only to promote mathematics learning but also to acquaint the bright young minds with the recent developments of mathematical tools that have emerged as a result of growing needs for the investigation of various aspects of Science and Technology as well as multi socio-economic problems. Also our goal is to evolve into an institution of excellence where the students as well as the faculties get actively involved in the process of scientific discovery. With this motive the Department of Mathematics started its functioning since the inception of the West Bengal State University in the year 2008. The present permanent faculty strength of the Department is seven (07). The Department of Mathematics follows a semester system and a grading system of marks. The M.Sc. programme has four semesters. The duration of the odd semester is usually from July to December and the even semester is from January to June. There are no mid-semester breaks. In each semester Mid-Term and End-Term examinations as well as continuous assessments are conducted. In the final semester besides Major Electives (i.e. special papers) & Minor Electives, each student has to do Project work and has to submit it in the form of a thesis followed by a comprehensive viva. At present the following special papers are being offered: i) Advanced Topology; ii) Advanced Complex Analysis; iii)Advanced Functional Analysis; iv) Non- Linear Differential Equations and Dynamical System; Research Activities Although the Department started its functioning in the year 2008 but within a very short span of time quite a good number of research papers ( 82 research papers ) are published in different reputed national / international journals ( most of them in foreign journals ) by the faculties . The faculties are also actively engaged in communicating research activities in the form of attending / delivering talks / presenting papers in various National / International conferences ( India and abroad ). Some research scholars under the guidance of the faculty members of the Department have been awarded for the Ph.D. degrees during this time. Several students right from the very first Batch of the Department have qualified NET ( i.e. Joint CSIR-UGC JRF) Examination. Main thrust of Research activities is carried on in the following fields: i) Topology, ii) Lebesgue Measure & Integration, iii) Complex Analysis, iv) Real Analysis, v) Functional Analysis, vi) Fixed Point Theory, vii) Dynamical System, viii) Theoretical Plasma Physics, ix) Nonlinear waves in Plasma, x) Quantum Mechanics, xi) Fuzzy Set Theory.
