Located in Sikkim Govt Law College, Gangtok was established on 24th September, 1980 to cater to the requirements of Legal Education in Sikkim. It is a co-educational institution affiliated to Sikkim University since the Academic Session 2008-09. The College enjoys the distinct position of not only being the first Law College to have been set up in Sikkim in 1980, but also the first College to have a 5 year integrated BA LLB Course. The College has been recognized by the UGC since 1993 and has been granted the status under Section 2 f & 12 B of the UGC Act. The College was transformed into a day College granting a BA LLB degree after a period of five years. The College was affiliated to the North Bengal University from its inception until 2008 when it had to be grafted in the newly established Sikkim University, a Central University and a first at that in the State. The College still caters to the present generation of students, preparing them for the Bar, Bench, Academics and other like arenas but its area of influence and reach has extended to the neighbouring States and Countries. Earlier the course was being conducted from rented premises in town but since 2007 the College has acquired its own campus below the Burtuk Helipad in Gangtok., The College is situated at Burtuk, on the outskirts of Gangtok, the State capital, in the midst of a natural and peaceful ambience far from the hustle and bustle of the city below Helipad, 4 kilometres away from the capital and is easily accessible by all parts of the city. The College is housed in a twin building each having four storeys. Each building has spacious rooms and the ambience of the locality is peaceful, a necessary requirement for an academic institution. The College building consists of class-rooms, office, library, separate Moot Court, Common Rooms for Boys and Girls, etc., The College offers BA LLB Five Years integrated Course composed in 10 ten Semesters with a teaching faculty of eighteen members with the essential qualifications and substantive experience. More than thirty five years have passed and it has carried a niche for itself as an institution that every year churns out young men and women of character and academic excellence.
