Located in Founded at Goalpota in December 1971, Sovarani Memorial College inherits a History of progressive development both in infrastructural and educational level. It has now its own premise. The College with its green complex of about 3.15 acres of land, with a flower garden, Greenfield and ponds is situated about 35 km away from the din and bustle of Kolkata. Late Satyanarayan Khan, a highly revered social activist of this village, to fulfill the aspiration of his deceased wife late Sovarani Devi, established this college. The founders kept in mind the need of the local people., Today this co-educational college offers undergraduate courses also in the science and commerce, besides Humanities streams. At present ten Honours subjects and fourteen general subjects from the curriculum of the College., The College initially started functioning as an Arts College with only Commerce being taught at Pre University level. From its Goalpota campus the College later shifted to its present building on 27th November, 1972. During its first academic session(1971-72) the college, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, offered subjects like English, Bengali, Political Science, Philosophy and History. Dr.Anadi Kumar Mahapatra, Head of the Department of Political Science was the first Teacher-in-charge of the College while Mr.Nanda Lal Ghosh, Bar-at-law, was the first President of the College., The College has on its own premise classrooms, well-equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology, office and Principal’s room; the Principal’s Quarter, the Rajat Jayanti Bhawan and the Library building. NAAC is an autonomous organization, established by the UGC in 1994. The NAAC peer team visited the college on 30th & 31st Dec, 2004. The College has been accredited at Sovarani Memorial College is located in a village, Jagatballavpur, but it is well connected with the metropolis of the state – Kolkata. The serene foliage surrounding the College is a mental relief for teachers, in particular, coming from the bustle of the city. Students coming from the hinterland also do enjoy the adjoining college grounds. It is a pleasure to be within and without, in spite of the political hustle surrounding., Since its voyage from 1st December 1971, when there was nothing around in 15-20 kms. circumference, there has been a gradual expansion of the institution. At present, there are twelve departments out of which ten are honours departments. Thirty teaching posts (whole-time permanent) have been sanctioned by the State Government thus far, but right now twenty-four teachers are working. Moreover, there are nineteen whole-time permanent non-teaching employees out of twenty-three sanctioned posts. Fourteen part-time teachers and a few guest lecturers are serving the institution., We have a student population of over 1200 and we have provided our staff with Internet and varying computer software package facilities, a N.C.C., a Computer Centre and a Gymnasium unit for our students.
