The college began its journey in the year 1949 as Jhargram Agriculture College. Practically, it is the brainchild of the then King of Jhargram - Late Raja Narasingha Malladev Bahadur. He donated more than 320 acres of land for the development of the college. The college was affiliated under Calcutta University till 1985. Teaching in new building started in 1950. Government of West Bengal took over this institution and renamed it as Jhargram Raj College (JRC). The first batch of students sat for I.Sc. (Agr.), I.A. and I.Sc. Examination in 1951, while B.Sc. (Agr.) (Pass & Hons) course was introduced from 1953.
