About CEED 2027: Exam Dates, Application Form, Eligibility, Syllabus, Pattern, Admit Card & Result

The Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is a prestigious national-level entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) on behalf of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. CEED is the qualifying gateway for admission to Master of Design (M.Des) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in design at premier institutions across India, including IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIITDM Jabalpur, and several prestigious result-sharing institutions.

CEED aims to evaluate a candidate’s aptitude for design, encompassing visual perception, drawing abilities, logical reasoning, creativity, communication skills, and problem-solving aptitude. The examination is conducted once a year and is divided into two mandatory segments: Part-A (a computer-based objective screening test) and Part-B (a pen-and-paper subjective design aptitude test). Only candidates who meet the qualifying cutoff in Part-A will have their Part-B answer scripts evaluated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common queries regarding CEED

Q1Is there any negative marking in CEED Part-A?
Yes. In Part-A, negative marking applies to incorrect responses in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) (-0.5 marks) and Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) (-0.5 marks). There is no negative marking for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
Q2Do all candidates get their Part-B paper evaluated in CEED?
No. Part-A acts as a screening test. Only candidates who secure marks equal to or above the Part-A qualifying cutoff mark (calculated based on mean and standard deviation) will have their Part-B answer booklet checked.
Q3Are physical calculators or drafting instruments allowed in CEED?
No physical calculators, measuring scales, or drafting templates are permitted. For Part-A, a virtual keypad is provided on-screen for NAT questions. For Part-B, candidates must bring their own pencils, sketch pens, and coloring mediums.
Q4Where can I download official CEED previous year question papers?
Official question papers and Part-A answer keys can be downloaded directly from the official CEED archive portal at ceed.iitb.ac.in as well as from indcareer.com.
Q5Does IIT Bombay provide official answer keys for Part-B subjective questions?
No. IIT Bombay does not release answer keys or standard model answers for Part-B because design questions are open-ended and subjective, evaluated by experienced design faculty based on individual creativity, logic, and drawing flair.
Q6How many years of previous papers should I solve for CEED?
It is strongly recommended to solve at least the past 8 to 10 years of CEED papers (2017 to 2026) to familiarize yourself with the latest CBT Part-A format and modern design problem briefs.
Q7What should I do if my CEED admit card photograph is blurred?
You must immediately write to the CEED office at [email protected] prior to the discrepancy deadline (January 07, 2027) attaching your application number, ID proof, and a crisp passport photo for correction.
Q8Is a digital copy of the CEED admit card on a mobile phone accepted at the exam center?
No. Test centers strictly require a physical, hard-copy printout of the CEED admit card. Candidates showing soft copies on phones or tablets will not be allowed inside.
Q9What stationery items are allowed for Part-B in CEED?
Candidates may carry pencils (HB, 2B, 4B, 6B), erasers, pencil sharpeners, dry coloring mediums (color pencils, sketch pens, pastel markers, crayons). Liquid mediums such as watercolors or poster paints that could spoil adjacent answer scripts are strictly disallowed.
Q10Is there an answer key released for CEED Part-B?
No. IIT Bombay releases answer keys exclusively for the objective Part-A paper. Part-B consists of creative, subjective drawing and design problems with no singular correct answer, evaluated through expert academic panels.
Q11Can I challenge the Final Answer Key of CEED?
No. The Final Answer Key is prepared after comprehensive scrutiny of all received challenges by subject expert committees. Once published, the Final Answer Key is definitive and no further appeals are entertained.
Q12Are candidate response sheets made available for CEED?
Candidates can view their individual chosen responses for Part-A by logging into the CEED Candidate Portal around the time of the draft key release.
Q13What is the validity of the CEED 2027 scorecard?
The CEED scorecard is valid for exactly one year from the date of declaration of results, meaning it can only be utilized for admission in the 2027–2028 academic year.
Q14Does clearing CEED guarantee admission into IIT Bombay or IISc?
No. Qualifying in CEED is the preliminary eligibility benchmark. Candidates must independently apply to participating institutes, which conduct their own second-stage evaluation comprising studio tests, portfolio presentations, and interviews.
Q15Can non-qualified candidates download a CEED scorecard?
No. Scorecards are issued exclusively to qualified candidates who meet both the Part-A and composite qualifying benchmarks. Non-qualified candidates can only view their Part-A marks on the result portal.
Q16How is the CEED Part-A cutoff calculated?
The General category cutoff is calculated using the formula: δ = Mean + (Standard Deviation / 2) based on the Part-A marks of all test takers in that examination cycle.
Q17What is the cutoff relaxation for OBC-NCL and SC/ST candidates in CEED?
OBC-NCL and EWS candidates receive a cutoff set at 90% (0.9 × δ) of the General category cutoff. SC, ST, and PwD candidates have a cutoff set at 50% (0.5 × δ) of the General category cutoff.
Q18Does clearing the CEED cutoff ensure admission into IIT M.Des programs?
No. Clearing the qualifying cutoff simply ensures your Part-B is graded and a scorecard is generated. Final admission depends on institute-level cutoffs, portfolio evaluations, studio tests, and interviews conducted independently by each IIT/IISc.
