Detailed Guide

About FTII Entrance Test (FTII JET)

FTII JET is the long-used name for the entrance examination conducted by the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune for admission to selected film and television postgraduate degree and certificate programmes. FTII currently titles its process the FTII Entrance Test (FTII-ET). The 2025-26 prospectus covers film and television disciplines such as direction and screenplay writing, cinematography, editing, sound, screen acting, art direction and production design, and television specializations. Applicants must consult the prospectus for the exact programmes offered in the cycle; FTII JET is not a single general paper for every course.

Latest cycle: FTII's official site lists the FTII Entrance Test 2025-26, including a re-examination notice. The re-examination was scheduled for 12 July 2026; official Stage-I result notices were subsequently published from 31 July through 15 September 2026 for different courses. As of 11 October 2026, the official admission page reviewed did not publish a new 2026-27/2027-28 entrance-test schedule. Dates and fee below are cycle-specific and should not be projected to the next admission year.

Programmes and subject streams

The 2025-26 prospectus divides courses into film and television wings. Film options include MFA specializations such as Direction and Screenplay Writing, Cinematography, Editing, Sound Recording and Sound Design, Screen Acting, Screenwriting, and Art Direction and Production Design. Television options include Post-Graduate Certificate specializations such as Direction, Electronic Cinematography, Video Editing, and Sound Recording and Television Engineering. The exact course list, duration, seat count and available application combinations can change by cycle.

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility is course-specific. In the 2025-26 prospectus, most MFA film specializations and television Post-Graduate Certificate specializations required a bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline. Art Direction and Production Design specified a bachelor's degree in applied arts, architecture, painting, sculpture, interior design or a related fine-arts field, or an equivalent qualification. Degree-equivalence documentation may be required. Applicants must check the exact chosen course entry because requirements are not identical for every specialization.

The prospectus also sets rules on permitted programme choices, category certificates and qualification-document verification. It does not describe FTII JET as a general Class 12 entrance exam. Check the current prospectus for course prerequisites and any category-specific conditions before applying.

Exam pattern and marking scheme (2025-26)

Most listed programmes used a two-stage selection process. Stage 1 was a written test with an objective Paper I and a descriptive Paper II. Paper I carried 60 marks across 30 MCQs; each correct response earned 2 marks, a wrong or multiple-selected response incurred 0.5 mark, and an unanswered question earned zero. Paper II carried 40 marks through descriptive questions. Both papers were required; total written-test time was 2 hours 30 minutes. Qualified candidates then progressed to a course-specific Stage 2 practical, analytical, performance and interaction assessment. The final merit weightage was 25% for Stage 1 and 75% for Stage 2.

Stage / paperFormat and subject focusMarks and timing
Stage 1, Paper I30 objective MCQs; allied arts, literature, general knowledge and awareness, plus questions specific to the selected specialization60 marks; +2 correct, -0.5 wrong or multiple-marked, 0 unanswered
Stage 1, Paper IIDescriptive questions assessing discipline-specific subject knowledge40 marks
Stage 1 totalBoth papers required; Paper I screened before Paper II evaluation for most programmes100 marks; 2 hours 30 minutes
Stage 2Course-specific mixed-format practical, analytical, performance and interaction assessment75% of final merit; Stage 1 carries 25%

Screen Acting has a separate pattern: the 2025-26 prospectus specified a 90-minute MCQ written test with 50 questions for 100 marks, followed by audition, performance and interaction. Written test and Stage 2 carried 25% and 75% weightage respectively. Always read the relevant course section because the acting process differs from the other listed programmes.

Stages, results and admission

FTII publishes course-wise lists of candidates qualified for later stages on its official admission page. For the 2025-26 process, Stage-I objective-result documents began appearing on 31 July 2026 and were published for additional courses through 15 September 2026. A Stage-I result or shortlist is not a final admission offer: candidates may still need to complete Paper II evaluation, practical or audition rounds, interaction, document verification and final merit/allocation requirements for their selected course.

Historical IndCareer pages used “FTII JET” and included a general exam overview and question-paper archive. These routes are preserved below as redirects to the current module pages. Historical general-pattern claims may differ from the course-specific 2025-26 FTII-ET process; the official prospectus takes precedence.
