Radha Govinda Baruah College was established in 1978 with the noble objective of spreading the light of higher education amongst the students of Kalapahar - Fatasil locality, quite a number of who belong to economically backward families. The college was named after Xingha Purusa Radha Govinda Baruah whose contribution in the fields of newspaper industry, sports organization, and cultural activities, is unparalleled in Assam.

Paschim Guwahati Mahavidyalaya is a co-educational institution. It is affiliated to the Gauhati University and was brought under the Grants-in-Aid status of the Government of Assam in the year 1996. It has been registered under 2(F) and 12(B) of the UGC Act 1956 in February 2005. The College has been assessed and accredited by NAAC in the year 2004. The college has been provincialised under the Provincialisation Act of Govt. of Assam in the year 2006.

LCB College was founded in 1971 as a night college by a group of teachers and operated from the premises of Maligaon Railway Higher Secondary School. At the initial stage it catered mostly to undergraduate working men and women.

One of the veritable nerve centres of women's education in north-eastern India, Handique Girls' College was established in 1939, a dream come true for the late Mrs. Rajabala Das, a pioneer in the field of women's education. The patronage and philanthropy of the late Radha Kanta Handique were also largely responsible for giving shape to the first institution for higher education for women, in the undivided state of Assam. Mrs. Rajabala Das also became the founder principal of the college.

The University Law College, established in the year 1948, is a constituent college of the Gauhati University and is the deemed Department of Law. The College is conveniently located at Jalukbari within the Gauhati University Campus.

Dispur College was established in 1978, with classes being held at Gopal Boro Govt. Higher Secondary School in the evening shift with arts faculty only. The founder principal was Sri Ghana Kanta Chetia Phukan. The college came into existence to meet the growing demand for higher education due to the shifting of the capital of Assam from Shillong to Dispur.
