Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi is a public technical and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College, it became the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1968. It was designated an Indian Institute of Technology in 2012.

Chandauli Polytechnic, Chandauli was started as civil Engineering school with an intake capacity of 60 students. In July 1963 Diploma courses in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering were introduced and the institution was made a Polytechnic with an intake capacity of 120 student; 30 in civil, 45 in Electrical and 45 in Mechanical. The Institute introduced a three year Diploma course in Agriculture Engineering with an intake of 30 student in 1973-74 making the total intake to 150.

The Department of Commerce came into being as an adjunct to the Department of Economics in the year 1940, the Silver Jubilee year of the Banaras Hindu University. The Department gained an independent status in a very short span of time. The Department of Commerce continued with its pace of growth and in the year 1965, on the eve of the Golden Jubilee year of the Banaras Hindu University, the Department of Commerce was raised to the status of a separate full-fledged Faculty.
