Shrimati Indira Gandhi College has its origin in the long cherished desire of the National College Council to establish a college exclusively for Girls, to overcome the woefully inadequate provision for the Higher Education of Women , that existed in the town till the Eighties, with no college for women having been started for the last three decades and many deserving and intelligent girls being denied the privilege of Collegiate Education.
