Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai for admission to the five-year integrated Master of Arts (M.A.) programme. The HSEE is intended to admit students to this programme in two streams: Development Studies and English Studies.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is an institute of national importance established through an Act of Parliament in 1959. It offers quality education in Humanities, Sciences, Engineering, Management and Technology at UG / PG level. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) has faculty from diverse
streams, such as Development Studies, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, Film Studies, Health Studies, History, International Relations, Philosophy, Politics, and Sociology.

The candidate should have passed 10+2 exam conducted by a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities with 60% marks in aggregate. Candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories
must secure a minimum of 55% in aggregate.
The candidate should be 25 years of age on October 1st in the examination year. In the case of SC, ST and PwD candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years.
Every qualified candidate will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed format that will be made available along with the letter of offer of admission. Candidates will be admitted only if they are physically fit for pursuing a course of study at the Institute.
The cost of application fee is Rs 2000/- for General / OBC Male candidates. The application fee is Rs 1000 for SC / ST / PwD and female candidates.
The service charges of the Bank will be Rs.30/-. The examination fee must be paid either through Net Banking / Credit Card / Debit Card or through the Indian Bank Challan generated during the process of application.
The application to HSEE is through online mode only.
Candidates must pay the examination fee as applicable is through Net Banking / Credit Card / Debit Card / Indian Bank Challan that will be generated during the process of application.
The Completed application form has to be submitted online only, along with the scanned photograph, signature, copies of relevant certificates and payment details of examination fee either through offline mode (system generated Indian Bank challan) or through online modes (net banking / credit cards / debit cards), on or before January 25, 2017.
The Chairman, HSEE,For all completely submitted application including fee, the receipt of application online will be reflected on the HSEE website. Candidates should check the HSEE website for the status of their applications after the second week of February 2017.
The exam paper will be in English language only. The exam duration is of three hours.
The exam paper contains two parts:
Part I consists of objective type multiple choice questions for 2½ hours duration (150 Minutes), administered
through computer.
Part I covers the following topics:
(i) English and Comprehension Skill;
(ii) Analytical and Quantitative Ability;
(iii) General Studies covering the areas of Indian Economics (since Independence), Indian Society, Contemporary World Affairs (post-World War II); and
(iv) Environment and Ecology.
Part II involves essay writing for 30 Minutes to be written on answer sheet distributed to the candidates at the end of Part I.
Part II requires the candidate to write an essay on general topic involving description, or/and
reflection or/and discussion.
The admit card will be available for download from the second week of March 2017 till mid-April 2017. The Admit Card will bear the name, photograph, date of birth, address and category of the candidate along with the name and the address of the HSEE Centre allotted.
The candidate should verify all the information in the admit card. If any issue is found, then get it corrected with the concerned authority. Candidates have to carefully preserve their Admit Cards till the entire admission procedure through HSEE is completed.

The HSEE Merit List made up of candidates who score at least 50% in HSEE will be prepared. Separate rank lists will be prepared corresponding to OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwD categories.
The entrance examination will be conducted in the following 10 cities:
Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Thiruvananthapuram.
A candidate has to give 2 choices for exam centre.
The final result will be listed on the website.
