Located in PSG College of Arts and Science was started on 15th August 1947, the Day of Independence, by PSG & Sons Charities, a Trust. Started as an intermediate College, it has emerged as one of the premier institutions of higher learning in this Country. The College offers 13 Undergraduate programmes and 15 Postgraduate programmes under grant - in - aid. Further 12 Undergraduate Courses and 2 Postgraduate courses are taught under self financing scheme. It also offers research programmes leading to M.Phil. degree in 13 disciplines and Ph.D. degree in 9 disciplines. The College is affiliated to the Bharathiar University. The College has been conferred autonomous status by the UGC and it enjoys full academic autonomy since June 1978. It has a long-standing tradition of excellence in research and scholarship. This tradition is coupled with the most up-to-date facilities for the pursuit of higher learning. The College has about 3279 students of whom 500 are Postgraduate students. It has 214 faculty members of whom 41 are with Ph.D. qualification and 84 with M.Phil qualification. Considerable amount of research is carried out in various laboratories. The College is situated in an area of 52.5 acres site and has a large number of buildings measuring more than 3,00,000 sq. feet. It has more than 100 classrooms and has well equipped laboratories in each discipline separately for UG and PG students. It has well equipped Computer Center with more than 100 workstations with latest hardware and software. "LET THERE BE CHARITY SO THAT OTHER PEOPLE MAY SHARE MY FAMILY'S PROSPERITY", said Sri. P.S.Govindasamy Naidu, the benevolent philanthropist, who believed firmly that 'Charity begins at home'. He daringly defined charity as "To serve society through development of education, industry and the needy and poor"., Thus was born PSG College of Arts and Science in the year 1947 to the PSG & Sons Charities Trust which was founded in the year 1926 by the four praise-worthy sons of P.S. Govindasamy Naidu, the four brothers of the PSG family, Thiru PSG Venkataswamy Naidu, Thiru PSG Rangaswamy Naidu, Thiru PSG Ganga Naidu and Thiru PSG Narayanaswamy Naidu who took "Charity through Education" with great missionary zeal. "The Destiny of a Nation is decided in its classrooms" - PSG College of Arts and Science has proved this prophetic statement with conviction by emerging as on of the premier institutions of higher learning in this country. The college has a long-standing academic tradition of excellence in research and scholarship. This is coupled with the most advanced facilities for the pursuit of higher learning. The college has a team of experienced and efficient faculty and our academic programmes are challenging and updated. Twenty two Undergraduate and Twenty one Postgraduate programmes are offered and may of them are unique. M.Phil and Ph.D programmes are offered in Seventeen faculties.The college was identified as a College with Potential for Excellence by UGC in October 2004. It is one among 47 colleges in the country, 8 in the State and the only one in Bharathiar University.The college has been accredited at the FIVE STAR level by NAAC and became an ISO 9001: 1994 certified institution in 2001 and subsequently an ISO 9001: 2000 certified institution since 2003. We, at PSGCAS strongly believe in the words of philosopher Plato that, "The direction in which education makes a man, will determine his future life". The UGC in the X Plan, had adopted a two-pronged strategy to improve teaching and research in colleges. it is based on the premise that higher education is one of the better routes for producing talented/skilled human resource. Hence the UGC wished to identify the colleges across the country where the quality is good. Many of these colleges have also used their 'autonomy' in an innovative manner to achieve better standards in teaching.
