BLDE University was established as a deemed university under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The university provides various medical courses. The Constituent College of the University, Shri B M Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Bijapur, was established in the year 1986 by BLDE Association (Bijapur Liberal Development Education Association).

The university provides following courses: MBBS, MD, MS, Post Graduate Diploma, Ph.D. Programs, Super Speciality Medical education programs. M.Sc& few Certificate & Diploma courses were introduced recently.

BLDE University has the necessary infrastructure and equipment for imparting medical education.
