About MIT Institute of Design Design Aptitude Test (MITID DAT)

MITID DAT (MITID Design Aptitude Test) is the design entrance examination conducted by MIT Institute of Design, Pune for admission to its Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and B.Des Fashion programmes. MITID's official B.Des admission page identifies the 2027 admission cycle, gives the application deadline as 28 February 2027, and schedules the Design Entrance Test for 4 April 2027. Applications are submitted online through the MITID DAT portal.

The official admission process has two phases. Phase 1 is the DAT, which is conducted at designated centres; candidates shortlisted on their DAT scores proceed to Phase 2, comprising a studio test and personal interview at the MITID campus in Pune. The institute states that selection norms, grades and weightage are decided by its Admission Committee and may change each year. This entry covers the B.Des and B.Des Fashion DAT route; M.Des admissions have a separate admission process.

Dates are for MITID DAT 2027 / 2027-28 B.Des and B.Des Fashion admissions. Test format and fee are based on MITID's published guidelines and registration portal; current portal instructions take precedence.

Eligibility for B.Des and B.Des Fashion

MITID's current B.Des admission page lists 10+2 from any stream (including HSC, CBSE, ICSE and IB) for B.Des and B.Des Fashion. Its eligibility note specifies a minimum of 45% marks for general/open category candidates, with a five-percentage-point relaxation for backward-class categories and persons with a disability who are Maharashtra State candidates. Candidates appearing in Class 12 may apply, but selected candidates must clear the qualifying examination for admission to be confirmed. Upload any category, domicile or other documents required to support a reservation claim by the application deadline.

MITID identifies candidates from outside Maharashtra as OMS (Other than Maharashtra State) and states that they are considered in the OMS General Open category. Maharashtra-specific reservations and concessions depend on the required documents and the current rules. Do not apply the B.Des eligibility thresholds to M.Des; the institute publishes M.Des requirements separately.

Application fee and registration

The DAT registration portal lists an application payment of Rs. 3,000 for Indian applicants and Rs. 4,500 for NRI, PIO, CIO and foreign national applicants. The portal says payment is made online by net banking, credit card or debit card. The admission page states that the application fee is non-refundable, including for incomplete or ineligible applications. Verify the amount, currency, category and payment instructions displayed in the live form before paying.

MITID DAT pattern and subject streams

MITID's admissions guidelines describe DAT as a combination of online and pen-and-paper questions at assigned centres. The stated format includes a computer-based objective MCQ test, a computer-based descriptive section, and an offline drawing test. The published assessment parameters include design inclination using visual clues and general awareness, analytical questions based on scientific understanding (PCM), logical thinking, verbal and non-verbal communication, and personality trends. MITID states that the weightage of parameters may change at the discretion of the paper-setting committee; the current official instructions should be checked for duration, question count, permitted materials and any cycle-specific updates.

DAT componentFormatSkills assessed
Objective testComputer-based MCQVisual clues, design inclination, general awareness, scientific understanding and logical thinking.
Descriptive testComputer-based responsesWritten communication, interpretation and ability to express ideas.
Drawing testOffline on paper supplied at the centreDrawing, visual expression and communicating ideas through sketches and other media.
MITID guidelines describe these components but do not publish a fixed question count, marks allocation or section duration on the reviewed page.

Studio test, interview and selection

Candidates shortlisted on their DAT scores are called for the second phase: a studio test and personal interview at the MITID campus in Pune. MITID says second-phase shortlist results are announced on its website and that separate call letters are not sent, so applicants should monitor the official site and their DAT portal account. The Admission Committee sets the procedures, grades and weightage each year. The institute's 2027 admission page currently gives the DAT date but does not publish second-phase dates.
