The Department of Applied Economics has been in existence since 1921, the very year of inception of Lucknow University. Prof. B.N. Chatterji was the first Head of the Department followed by Prof. O.P. Gupta, FSS (London), Major G.Datt, Prof. G.L. Hajela, Prof. M.P. Singh and Prof. K.L. Maheshwari. Eminent scholars like Dr. D. Pant, Dr. A.M. Lorenzo and Dr. S.R.K. Rao have been on the staff of the Department. In 1962-63, the Department introduced a separate Post-graduate degree of M.Com.
