Department of History
The Department of History was established in the Savitribai Phule Pune University in 1969. Earlier, it was located in the Deccan College, but at that time, a separate Department was set up in the University of Pune for the study of Medieval and Modern Indian history, while Archaeology and Ancient Indian History remained with the Deccan College. Dr. A.R. Kulkarni, now Professor Emeritus, was the first Head of the new Department, which remained a very small one for many years.

Research
The main thrust area of the Department is Western Indian history, Medieval and Modern periods. The key areas of research include Maratha history, Maharashtra in the 19th century, and aspects of the social and economic history of western India. In keeping with recent trends in history, areas of research have been expanded to include water management in the 18th century, urban history, maritime history and diplomatic history.
Facilities
LIBRARY
The Department has a small reference library, as well as some published archival material Books have been donated to us by the British Council Library, as well as by various individuals. No books are issued to the students, but they are permitted to sit in the library and work / refer during working hours. The Department is well equipped with the necessary educational aids.
Computer Lab Facility
The computer laboratory has several latest PCs with internet facilities for the use of faculty and research students. Department has the latest configured computers with all necessary software's are installed on it .
