About Pune University

The Savitribai Phule Pune University was established on 10th February, 1949 under the Poona University Act. The University of Pune (earlier name) was renamed as Savitribai Phule Pune University on 9 November 2014. The university is named after Savitribai Phule, an Indian social reformer who is known for her contribution towards empowerment and emancipation of women through education. It has been given the highest “A” rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for its overall performance.

The university offers excellent programs in various areas including Science, Commerce, Arts, Languages and Management Studies. The university houses 46 academic departments. It is popularly known as the ‘Oxford of the East’. It has about 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses.
